Overview

The Cavendish Science Campus was established in 1921 on a site four miles from the Main Campus, in response to the rapid growth of Aldenmoor’s scientific faculties and the practical impossibility of housing large-scale experimental facilities within the historic Main Campus’s listed buildings.

The campus is organised around a central science spine — a sequence of interconnected laboratory buildings designed to encourage informal collision between researchers in different disciplines — flanked by clinical facilities, three teaching hospitals, and the recently completed Thornfield Observatory.

Research facilities

  • Aldenmoor Genomics Institute — six next-generation sequencing platforms and a dedicated bioinformatics suite.
  • Cryo-EM Suite — two 300kV instruments available to all Cavendish researchers on a booking basis.
  • Thornfield Observatory — 1-metre and 2.4-metre optical telescopes; radio telescope array; public stargazing monthly.
  • Aldenmoor Computational Chemistry Cluster — 12,000-core HPC system; priority allocation for EPSRC-funded projects.
  • Engineering Design Studios — rapid prototyping, additive manufacturing, and materials testing facilities.
